Paging all of Twingoppo, anyone have any experience with these cars?

Kinja'd!!!

Me, soon, hopefully.

My paycheck arrives in about 2 weeks, and my search for the Twingo begins soon. What should I look out for in perticular, when buying a used one?

Ive done research into them but sadly haven’t owned one yet (I have a 2nd gen). They seem overall pretty solid, mostly just checking routine maintenance has been done, especially timing belts.

Get one with the canvas roof!

These tend to be treated as somewhat disposable. They might be quite solid cars but no car will survive endless neglect. Make sure it’s maintained somewhat properly. Parts will be cheap and it’ll be easy to work on, but I guess it’s better to buy a good one that is relatively expensive. Mostly because ‘relatively expensive’ for a mk1 Twingo means it’s only a few hundred euros more expensive.

Also, when you get an early one you can make the Americans here jealous and then (when it’s at least 25 years old) ship it to them for a highly inflated price!

Were the mk1s available with RHD? If you really want one we could get you one easily and cheaply (LHD), I don’t know if they’re easy to insure in the UK though, being LHD and all.

LHD only and never officially sold here.

Wait, ‘we could get you one’...you mean ‘we’ Oppo or ‘we’ as in your company? Do you do auto export?

We, Oppo. I did export a 1988 BMW E30 wagon to an American Oppo member in Texas once though.

We, Oppo: we’ve had some Euro meets so we’re not some faceless internet strangers among each other. mk1 Twingos are CHEAP (three digit prices) and if he takes a weekend mister Twingo Tamer could fly to France, the Netherlands or Germany and drive a Twingo back home in the UK within that weekend. If he’d really like one. To Canada it becomes a bit trickier obviously, but as you’ve got a 15 year import ban (and not 25 years) it is quite feasible. You just need to find out how expensive shipping would be, that’s the biggest burden.

I mean, if he has to import it anyway, might as well be a French Twingo :)

Absolutely, but I didn’t want to make you (or Clement) feel like you ‘have’ to take any initiative here.

Yeah only LHD sadly. I have thought a few times of picking one up on the continent and driving it back, but I’m set for tiny cars at the minute haha.

Maybe I’ll have to get you guys to find me a decent FIAT 126p in good nick :P

...or a Seicento Sporting...! So many small car options! :P

Fiat 126p will be A LOT harder to find (and more expensive) than a Seicento or Twingo though, at least for us Western Europeans. I see mk1 Twingos every day, Seicentos aren’t rare but I haven’t seen a 126p in years.

But yes, when you decide you want one ‘we’ will be able to help you.
